☀️ Heat Safety for Dogs in Central Texas

How to Keep Your Pup Safe During Austin’s Hot Months

Texas summers are no joke, and neither is the risk heat poses to our dogs. At Rescue ATX Dogs, we’ve seen how quickly heat-related issues can develop — especially in rescue pups still adjusting to a new environment.

Whether you’re a foster, adopter, or lifelong dog guardian, here are essential tips to keep your furry friend safe in the scorching Austin heat.

🌡️ 1. Walk Smart: Early or Late Only

Pavement can reach 130–160°F on hot afternoons — enough to burn paws in seconds.
Best practice:

  • Walk dogs before 10 a.m. or after 8 p.m.

  • Stick to grass or shaded areas

  • Try the “5-second rule”: place the back of your hand on the pavement — if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.

💧 2. Hydration is Everything

Always carry water on walks. Keep multiple water bowls around the house and refill often.
Bonus tips:

  • Add ice cubes to water bowls

  • Freeze low-sodium broth in treat molds for cooling snacks

  • Consider a cooling vest or bandana for longer outdoor time

🐶 3. Know the Signs of Heatstroke

Heatstroke can happen fast.
Watch for:

  • Heavy panting or drooling

  • Bright red gums

  • Vomiting or diarrhea

  • Lethargy or uncoordinated movement
If you see these signs, get your dog into shade or AC immediately and contact a vet.

🧊 4. Create a Cool Refuge

Not all dogs are used to indoor life — especially if they’re new to fostering. Help them beat the heat:

  • Let them rest near a fan or AC

  • Use elevated cooling beds or mats

  • Never crate in direct sunlight or unventilated rooms

🚗 5. NEVER Leave a Dog in the Car

Even with windows cracked, cars can reach deadly temps in minutes. In Austin, it’s illegal to leave an animal in a vehicle in dangerous conditions — and for good reason.
Leave pets at home during errands. Always.

🐾 Special Precautions for:

  • Flat-faced breeds (like Frenchies, Bulldogs, Boxers)

  • Senior dogs

  • Puppies under 6 months

  • Dogs with dark or thick coats

These dogs overheat faster. Keep their outings minimal during heat waves.
