Found a Dog in Austin? Here’s What to Do.

Your guide to helping strays, found pups, and potential rescue dogs — the Rescue ATX way.

If you’ve come across a loose dog in the Austin area — first of all, thank you. Not everyone stops to help, but you did. Whether they’re a lost pet or an abandoned stray, your actions could save their life. Here’s how to help them safely and responsibly.

🐾 Step 1: Check for a Tag or Microchip

If the dog is friendly and safe to approach:

  • Look for an ID tag with a phone number or address.

  • Take them to a vet or pet store (like PetSmart or Petco) to scan for a microchip — it’s free!

📲 Step 2: Share, Post & Report

Use these tools to help them get home:

  • Post on Facebook groups:

  • Upload to Petco Love Lost: petcolovelost.org

  • Report to Austin Animal Center (even if you’re holding onto the dog):

    • Call 311 or use the Found Animal Report

Important: You’re required to report the dog as found within 48 hours if you plan to hold onto them.

🐶 Step 3: Keep the Dog Safe (If You Can)

If the dog seems healthy and you’re able to:

  • Hold onto them for a few days while searching for an owner.

  • Keep them separate from your pets at first, just to be safe.

Can’t hold onto the dog? That’s okay.

  • You can take them to Austin Animal Center, the open-intake shelter for the area.

  • Call ahead and ask about their current intake status.

🧡 Step 4: No Owner Found? Let’s Talk Rescue.

If you've searched and no one comes forward after a mandatory 3-day hold, and you’re interested in getting the dog into a rescue:

  • Reach out to Rescue ATX Dogs or another reputable local group.

  • Be ready to share:

    • Good photos

    • A short bio (behavior, energy level, dog/kid friendliness)

    • Medical/vet info, if available

We’re a small, foster-based rescue — we don’t have a shelter — so we need a foster commitment or funding in place to take on a new pup. But we’re always happy to guide you through next steps and help you network the dog to safety.

🤔 Not Sure What to Do?

You’re not alone. The stray dog system can be overwhelming. But you don’t have to figure it out by yourself.
DM us on Instagram @rescueatxdogs or email info@rescueatxdogs.org and we’ll help however we can — whether that’s posting, connecting you with resources, or walking through what to do next.

Quick Reminders:

✅ Always report the found dog — it’s the law in Travis County.
✅ Holding onto a dog for more than 3 days without reporting is considered unlawful.
✅ You can make a huge difference — even if you’re just helping temporarily.

Every safe stray is one less dog at risk. Thanks for stepping up — we’re with you. 💛
