Foster Checklist

Getting Started

Set up a quiet, secure space for decompression Remove hazards (food, meds, cords, small objects)
Secure exits (baby gates, check doors/fences)

Daily Routine

Feed twice daily, same times.
Stick to provided food (no table scraps).

Short, structured walks only.
Offer puzzle toys, slow feeders, or basic training.
Avoid dog parks until evaluated.

Let the dog set the pace—slow intros only.
Monitor all interactions with kids & pets.

Supplies Checklist

Crate (highly recommended)
Leash + martingale collar
Food & water bowls
Dog bed or blankets
Chew toys + enrichment tools
High-value treats for training

Emergencies & Vet Care

Use rescue-approved vets only (call first for non-emergencies).
Track symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, etc.).
Administer flea/tick & heartworm meds as directed.
Attend all scheduled vet visits.

Emergencies:
Contact Rescue ATX immediately if injured/sick.
If the dog escapes—DO NOT chase. Call the rescue.

Understanding your dog

If your foster is a FLIGHT RISK:
Use martingale collar or harness + leash at all times outside.
NEVER off-leash in an unsecured area.
Secure dog before opening any doors.
Keep walks short, calm, and controlled.

If your foster RESOURCE GUARDS:
Trade for items with high-value treats—never grab.
Feed separately, in quiet areas.
Do not reach into crate while they’re eating or chewing.

If your foster is SEMI-FERAL or FEARFUL:
Give space—no forced interaction.
Avoid eye contact if nervous.
Use calm, slow movements.
Reward small signs of trust.
Leash indoors if hard to approach.
Provide access to a safe crate.
